July 28, 2011: Marion L. Steele's portrait watches over the halls of Steele High School. Miss Steele was a 1903 Amherst High School graduate and starting teaching in Amherst in 1909. In 1913, she became principal of Central School in Amherst where she would remain until her ultimate retirement in 1957. In 1958, the district's newly built high school was named in her honor.
