Staff Appreciation Week May 4th - 8th
We have fun events planned for students and staff for the week of May 4th-8th! Monday wear a baseball hat, Tuesday wear pajamas, Wednesday wear nice clothes, Thursday wear crazy socks, and Friday wear a super hero shirt. Read more here....Also attached is form for all students to complete and return to school on Monday saying why their favorite staff member is a super hero! 
Comet Conversation
Please check out this week's Comet Conversation with Superintendent Steve Sayers and don't forget to subscribe to The Official YouTube Channel of Amherst EVSD! This week, Superintendent Sayers talks to Harris teacher Julie Hammond about Camp Invention this summer. Camp Invention is a STEM science camp for students entering grades 1-6 and will be held at Nord Middle School from June 15th-19th.  Check it out!
 
Staff Members of the Month
Congratulations to Leah Renner and Chuck Boesel for being the Amherst Staff Members of the Month! Leah is the art teacher at Harris Elementary School, and Chuck is the Head Custodian at Powers Elementary School. Leah and Chuck were nominated by their peers and we're so glad that they are a part of the Amherst family! Leah and Chuck will receive an appreciation gift card donated by the Freshwind Church in Amherst.
    
It's Time To Register Your Child For Kindergarten
Please call Powers Elementary School at 988-8670 to schedule a registration appointment to enroll your child in the tuition free all day kindergarten program at Powers for the fall. Appointments are available every day prior to the upcoming evening registration night. We are also registering any new first or second grade students. Please view the links for required documents, print and complete registration form before attending your appointment. Registration forms can also be picked up at Powers. We will also be hosting a registration night on May 14th from 4-7:30 pm at Powers. If parents choose they can call ahead and schedule an appointment time or we are happy to take walk ins too.   
Camp Invention
Camp Invention is returning to Amherst this summer for the third consecutive year! Camp Invention will run from June 15th - 19th for students entering 1st-6th grade. Please check out this Camp Invention Early Bird flyer for more information!
 
Summer Practice
For parents who are interested in summer practice for students in reading, math, etc., please check out the flyers below for each school. We encourage parents to have their children continue learning over the summer to prevent summer slide. If you are interested in some of the Summer Solutions products, please check out the flyers and visit their website.  Summer Solutions flyers for Powers Elementary, Harris Elementary, Nord Middle School, and Amherst Junior High. 
Emerging Elite Track Camp
The second annual Emerging Elite Track Camp will take place on Wednesday, May 6th, Friday, May 8th, Wednesday, May 13th, and Friday, May 15th. There will be two sessions: Session #1 will take place from 3:00 - 3:45 p.m. and will be open to fifth and sixth grade athletes. Session #2 will take place from 4:00 - 4:45 p.m. and will be open to first through fourth grade athletes. Both sessions will have age-appropriate activities on the following topics: Dynamic warm-up, running techniques, hurdle techniques, throwing techniques, baton/relay techniques, jumping techniques and proper nutrition, diet and fun for athletes. All sessions will take place at the Richard S. Cooley Track at Marion L. Steele High School. For more information and sign-up forms please review the Emerging Elite Track Camp brochure. 
Sandstone Summer Theatre
Sandstone Summer Theatre is holding registration for their children's summer theatre camps. Registration will be held on Saturday, May 9th from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Thursday, May 21st from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Marion L. Steele High School lobby and Thursday, June 4th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Marion L. Steele High School cafetorium. Children must be present at registration. Sunshine Company is performing Blue Suede Paws and that is for students who have completed grades 2 -5. Sandstone Apprentices are performing Seussical, Jr. and that is for students who have completed grades 6 -8. Amherst Food Pantry
The Leo Club at Marion L. Steele High School is working with the Amherst Food Pantry to pilot a Weekend Backpack program that reaches out to our high school students who qualify for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. We collect food items of boxed cereals, non-cream based soups, canned meats, fruit bars, granola bars, pop tarts, microwave mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, canned fruit or vegetables, ravioli, spaghetti, and tuna.  If you are interested in this new program, please stop by the Steele Guidance Office each Friday to get your backpack. 
Keeping Our Children Safe
The Lorain County Board of Mental Health is hosting a forum on Thursday, May 14th, at Lorain County Community College entitled Keeping Our Children Safe. Mark Braden, who lost a son at Sandy Hook, will speak about youth who die prematurely and the promise of interventions that keep children safe. The forum is free to all parents and caregivers but is for adults only due to the content of the presentation. PowerSchool Parent Account
If you would like to create a PowerSchool Parent account to access your child's grades and information, please use the attached PowerSchool Parent Account document and the PowerSchool Parent iPad document. You may also find these downloadable documents on our website under Parent Resources or Forms and More. (If you are new to the district or are a Kindergarten parent, you will be receiving a letter with this information specifically for you and your children within the next few days.) 
E-mail Update
The Amherst Schools will be sending two or three updates a month via e-mail to parents beginning in mid-September. Updates will highlight student achievements, innovative classrooms, district operations, and plans. Videos may be included as well. If you are interested in receiving these updates, simply email our EMIS Secretary, Patti Killen, and include your name, names of your children, and your e-mail address. Thank you and Go Comets!!

Since 1986, the Amherst Schools Educational Foundation has awarded more than $366,000 in teacher grants and almost $200,000 in student scholarships within the Amherst community. To make a contribution to the Amherst Schools Educational Foundation, simply go to the Community Foundation of Greater Lorain County's "Make A Gift Now" webpage and type "Amherst" in the Keyword section of the donation tool bar. Select the Amherst Schools Endowment Fund or the Amherst Schools Fine Arts Endowment Fund to make a donation. It's that easy! And remember, your donation is "A gift that gives forever"!
