2011-07-27Marilyn Miller, a summer employee, hangs a portrait of her great-grandfather, Fred Powers, for whom Powers Elementary is named. Mr. Powers was a 1906 graduate of Amherst High School and began his teaching career in 1908. He returned to Amherst in 1918 to be superintendent for the next 38 years. After supervising the construction of Powers Elementary, he became its principal until his final retirement in 1962. Arthur Darakis, a 1942 Amherst High School graduate, painted the original portrait.View
