Powers Elementary School

There has been a change in the dismissal times and last day for students at Shupe and Powers School.

• May 25: Last day for preschool
• May 28: No School, Memorial Day
• May 29: Last day for kindergarten morning and afternoon sessions 
• May 30: Early dismissal at 1:30 p.m. for first, second, and third grade

The Amherst School District is pleased to announce, pending board approval on May 21, the before and after school program called “Comet Kid’s Club” beginning with the 2012 - 2013 school year.

• Program would operate for students in grades K - 6 and be held at Powers, Harris, and Nord.
• Program will be provided at no additional cost to the school district. The program will be funded by parents who are interested in paying for the service.
• Start time would be 6:30 a.m.(with dismissal to class) and then if chosen, dismissal in the afternoon to the afterschool program ending at 6:30 p.m.
• Program will follow the school calendar.
• Flat rate for both the a.m. and p.m. sessions.
• Amherst Schools qualified staff will facilitate this program.

In April 2011, Peggy Kordeleski succumbed to panceratic cancer. In her honor, her family is raising money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) which funds research towards ending pancreatic cancer.

The first benefit is a memorial spaghetti dinner on Saturday, June 2, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Amherst VFW. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children ages between three and twelve. Children under three are free. Dinner includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, roll with butter, and dessert. Tickets for the event and the fifty-fifty raffle at the dinner may purchased from Maryann Kordeleski (440-988-4786) and Liane Nossek (443-994-0096).

On Monday, June 4, Ziggy's Pub and Resaurant hosts the second benefit. Guests should tell their staff member they are there for the PANCAN or Peggy Kordeleski benefit and twenty-percent of the bill's profit will be sent to PANCAN. This applies to both dine-in and carry-out orders.

On Thursday, June 16, a team will be participating for Peggy in PANCAN's Purple Stride walk at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Peggy's team welcomes participants and sponsors. To sponsor, review Peggy's page on PANCAN's website.

Girls ages seven and eight are invited to participate in the Amherst Softball Association Summer Skills Camp at the Amherst Junior High fields on June 13, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The camp teaches the fundamentals of fielding, throwing, catching, base running, pitching, and hitting.For more information read the registration flyer or contact Andrew Dever by email or phone 440-653-1333.

Lady Comets basketball coach John Rositano will be conducting a five-day instructional camp for girls entering grades three through nine in the fall. This will be held at Steele's gym from Monday, June 11, to Friday, June 15. $60 fees are due by June 8. Please read the registration form or call John Rositano at 440-396-9641 for more information.

All Amherst Schools will have a two hour early dismissal on the last day of school, Wednesday, May 30.

Baseball camp is open for boys entering grades one through six. Camp will be held on June 11 through June 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Steele Varsity Field. $60 registration fees and the registration and release form are due Thursday, May 31. 

All spirit wear will be twenty-percent off at the Comet Corner now through the end of the year. Please check store hours.

Our annual Powers Field Day will take place on Friday, May 25. The rain date for the event will be Tuesday, May 29. You will be sent a volunteer sign up sheet to return if helping out with the day interests you. The sign up sheet will be coming home with your student the first week of May. Here is the information about groups and times.

Morning session: 9:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.
Participants: All third grade classes

Afternoon session: 1:15 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.
Participants: All second grade classes

Where: The school grounds to the north and east of Powers school.

Volunteers are asked to report thirty minutes prior to their session to the north end of the building. PTO coordinators will assist you in finding your station.

Even if you aren’t helping out with a station, any and all are welcome to come and watch the Field Day events.

Attention to all girls entering grades four through nine and interested in learning the fundamentals for volleyball. Camp will be held June 4, through June 8, at the Jr. High and Steele High School. Any student interested should download the registration form and mail to Steele High School on or before Wednesday, May 23.

All boys entering second through sixth grade are invited to attend the 2012 Amherst Youth Football Camp from Monday, June 4, to Thursday, June 7. Children will learn fundamentals of the game and be exposed to several positions. This is a non-contact camp. Price is $60 to attend.

Children entering kindergarten through the sixth grade are invited to attend a three-day summer cheer clinic. The clinic is across the street from the high school starting Wednesday, August 1, until Friday, August 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The clinic teaches children sideline chants, cheers, dances, cartwheels, and cheerleading jumps. The rest of the schedule is filled with team-building excerises and fun activities. The children's safety is the number one priority. Participants will perform cheers learned at camp for the second quarter of the football game on Friday, September 7 (September 14 if there is rain).

Interested students should fill out and mail the registration forms with the $40 fees. Fees and forms are due on June 30. Email Sarah Rigda if there are further questions.
