AJH Nominated National Blue Ribbon School
Amherst Junior High School is one of only 14 schools across Ohio that has been nominated for National Blue Ribbon School recognition from the U.S. Department of Education.  The National Blue Ribbon Program has recognized only 7,000 "Great American Schools" since it began in 1982.  As a nominee, AJH will have the opportunity to apply for the award and share their best practices with other schools from coast to coast.  Congratulations to everyone at AJH!

Emergency Text Messaging - Next Steps

Several weeks ago we began collecting guardian cell phone numbers as the first step in the process to offer emergency SMS text messages. We are now ready to begin step 2, which is having guardians opt in to receive these messages.

1. If you have not already filled out the form to have your cell phone on file, please click here for the link to do so.

If the school did not have your cell phone number on file and added it, wait at least 24 hours before proceeding to the next step.

2. From your cell phone, text the word "JOIN" to the number 56360.

If our messaging system finds a match for your number in its database, you will receive a confirmation message thanking you for joining school alerts.

At anytime you can unsubscribe by texting Stop to 56360.

3. Create a contact on your phone for the district with the phone number 56360. Then, when you receive a text from this number you know will who is sending it.

Nord Homework Lab
Homework Lab is a supervised setting that offers students an opportunity to complete their homework, while receiving assistance from a certified teacher. The lab meets each week, Monday through Thursday from 2:50-3:50 p.m. In order to cover the expenses for this lab, there is a monthly fee that is determined by the number of actual lab days during each month - the fee breaks down to $3.00 per day. The month of February will have 14 lab days, thus the cost for the month will be $42.00. It starts on February 2nd. Payment and forms are due by Friday, January 30th.
Emergency Alerts via Text Message
In an effort to keep everyone informed as quickly as possible during a potential emergency situation, we are in the process of introducing SMS (text) messaging for emergency alerts. Parents, please click "Read More" to learn more and to update your cell phone number.
School Board Approves All-Day Kindergarten
At Monday's Board Meeting, the Amherst School Board voted to move forward with implementing tuition-free, all-day, every day Kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year. Amherst Schools are currently on track to be financially stable through at least the 2018-2019 school year. Recent cost-saving measures and the restructuring of staff in other areas will support the move to all-day Kindergarten.
Amherst Police Honored at Board Meeting
The Amherst School Board honored the Amherst Police Department at Monday's Board Meeting for all of the help and support they provide to the Amherst Schools. As a community, we thank our police department for all that they do to ensure our safety and security!

Student Email Accounts

As a school district we are taking steps to enhance technology and learning in the classroom. As a result, the district has created an Amherst Google email account for all students in grades 5-12. These email accounts will allow students to safely communicate with their teachers, work collaboratively with other students, and share files without using a personal email account.

For many students, this may be their first personal email account. The good news is that these email accounts are monitored and owned by the Amherst City Schools. Therefore, unacceptable usage of the account may result in disciplinary action, loss of privileges, and access to district technology. It is our goal to help students learn to utilize email as a positive and productive tool in a school setting.

Parents: Please note that students will receive their email usernames and passwords (if they haven't already). It is the same username and password they use with Pearson to check their grades on-line.

If you have any questions, please call or email your child's teacher or Bill Miller - We are here to help.

PowerSchool Parent Account
If you would like to create a PowerSchool Parent account to access your child's grades and information, please use the attached PowerSchool Parent Account document and the PowerSchool Parent iPad document. You may also find these downloadable documents on our website under Parent Resources or Forms and More. (If you are new to the district or are a Kindergarten parent, you will be receiving a letter with this information specifically for you and your children within the next few days.)
E-mail Update
The Amherst Schools will be sending two or three updates a month via e-mail to parents beginning in mid-September. Updates will highlight student achievements, innovative classrooms, district operations, and plans. Videos may be included as well. If you are interested in receiving these updates, simply email our EMIS Secretary, Patti Killen, and include your name, names of your children, and your e-mail address. Thank you and Go Comets!!
