| 2011-07-29 | Josiah Harris first journeyed to the Amherst area in 1814 to look over the land he had traded his New York farm for years earlier. Seeing that the Ohio land was better for farming, he moved his family in 1818 to what would become Amherst. Harris became a leader in the new settlement and was named by the community justice of the peace, town sheriff, and town judge. He served several terms as a member of the Ohio General Assembly and served one term as a state senator. After holding that position, he became Amherst's postmaster, an office which he held for 41 years. He also donated the land upon which Amherst's town hall stands today. | View |
