Freshman Class Advisors 2015/16
Current 8th grade students will be voting on their freshman leadership team for the 2015/16 school year.  The positions available are president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer.  There are sign-up sheets in the office for those students who wish to run for any of these officer positions.  If you are interested, please sign up by Tuesday, May 5.  Voting at AJH will take place in social studies classes on Thursday, May 14. 
Job Description:
The president is the "leader" and decision maker for the freshman class.  He/She works with the freshman advisor and Student Council to organize the Homecoming float, Crazy Games, and dodgeball team, promote school spirit, and attend Student Council meetings.
The vice-president, secretary, and treasurer assist the president and attend all Student Council meetings.
 
AJH Awards Programs
Student invitations for the AJH awards programs will be sent home with students on Monday, May 4.   The 7th grade awards program will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20.  The 8th grade program will also begin at 9:00 a.m. and is on Thursday, May 21.   
Comets Colorguard Clinic
Attention students. Do you like to perform, travel, make friends or be part of a successful team? You are encouraged to join the Amherst Marching Comets Colorguard. Clinics will be held Monday, April 27, and Wednesday, April 29, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. No experience is necessary and it is a great opportunity to become part of the band without playing an instrument. For more information see Mr. Barbaro in the band room. 
Washington DC Roommate Request Form
We are planning for next year's Washington DC trip on October 21-23, 2015. All students must have their roommate information by May 29, 2015 or roommates will be assigned. The permission slip and a deposit of $100.00 are also due on May 29. Please see the attached  Washington DC Permission Slip and Washington DC Permission Slip 2 for more information.

Amherst Color Run
Steele PTO is hosting a fundraising Color Run on Saturday, May 2nd. The Color Run will begin at Marion L. Steele Highs School and participants will complete in a 5K walking or running course. Throughout the course there will be color splash zones where participants will be showered with color...be prepared to get wet! For more information or if you would like to participate, please download the Color Run registration and permission form. Return completed registration form and race fees to Steele. attention Steele PTO. Volunteers are also needed to man water and color stations and to assist with registration. Techie Camp
With support from the Nordson Corporation, TECH CORPS, will implement its Free Techie Camp program with 200 students throughout Lorain County, Youngstown, and New Castle, PA during the summer of 2015.  Techie Camp is a week-long, full-day technology experience designed for elementary and middle school students.  The goal of Techie Camp is to engage students in activities that can stimulate a deeper interest in technology.  The Techie Camp Application Packet needs to be submitted by Friday, May 1st.  If you have any questions, please call 614-583-9211. 
Summer Practice
For parents who are interested in summer practice for students in reading, math, etc., please check out the flyers below for each school. We encourage parents to have their children continue learning over the summer to prevent summer slide. If you are interested in some of the Summer Solutions products, please check out the flyers and visit their website.  Summer Solutions flyers for Powers Elementary, Harris Elementary, Nord Middle School, and Amherst Junior High. 
Amherst Food Pantry
The Leo Club at Marion L. Steele High School is working with the Amherst Food Pantry to pilot a Weekend Backpack program that reaches out to our high school students who qualify for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. We collect food items of boxed cereals, non-cream based soups, canned meats, fruit bars, granola bars, pop tarts, microwave mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, canned fruit or vegetables, ravioli, spaghetti, and tuna.  If you are interested in this new program, please stop by the Steele Guidance Office each Friday to get your backpack. 
AJH Nominated National Blue Ribbon School
Amherst Junior High School is one of only 14 schools across Ohio that has been nominated for National Blue Ribbon School recognition from the U.S. Department of Education.  The National Blue Ribbon Program has recognized only 7,000 "Great American Schools" since it began in 1982.  As a nominee, AJH will have the opportunity to apply for the award and share their best practices with other schools from coast to coast.  Congratulations to everyone at AJH!

Keeping Our Children Safe
The Lorain County Board of Mental Health is hosting a forum on Thursday, May 14th, at Lorain County Community College entitled Keeping Our Children Safe. Mark Braden, who lost a son at Sandy Hook, will speak about youth who die prematurely and the promise of interventions that keep children safe. The forum is free to all parents and caregivers but is for adults only due to the content of the presentation. PowerSchool Parent Account
If you would like to create a PowerSchool Parent account to access your child's grades and information, please use the attached PowerSchool Parent Account document and the PowerSchool Parent iPad document. You may also find these downloadable documents on our website under Parent Resources or Forms and More. (If you are new to the district or are a Kindergarten parent, you will be receiving a letter with this information specifically for you and your children within the next few days.) 
E-mail Update
The Amherst Schools will be sending two or three updates a month via e-mail to parents beginning in mid-September. Updates will highlight student achievements, innovative classrooms, district operations, and plans. Videos may be included as well. If you are interested in receiving these updates, simply email our EMIS Secretary, Patti Killen, and include your name, names of your children, and your e-mail address. Thank you and Go Comets!!
