Amherst Boys Cross Country 1959-2007 - An Amazing Tradition
Amherst Boys Cross Country has a tradition rich in success over the past 48 years. 14 Amherst teams have qualified for the State Meet resulting in two big-school State Championship Titles(1962 and 1977). Amherst has had the individual State Champion three times; Glen "Sonny" Wilburn in 1971 and Pete Kummant in 1973 and 1974, with Kummant breaking the State course record on the Scarlet and Grey course in Columbus in 1974. The Comets have produced over a dozen individual First Team All Ohioans, the last being Zak Wilburn in 2004.
Comet teams were especially dominant in the 1970s under the direction of Dick Cooley. In an eight year stretch(1970-1977) Amherst qualified as a team 7 times for the State Meet, winning the big school crown in 1977. The Comets had multiple wins at several Invitations including Tiffin, St. Joe's, Ashland, Bowling Green, and Mansfield. Amherst won the Tiffin Carnival 6 times in the 70s and had 4 DIFFERENT runners win the individual title during that stretch.
At the conference level, Amherst again has been a proven powerhouse. The Comets won 15 Lakeland Conference titles including 13 straight(1970-1982), and have won 4 titles since joining the Southwestern Conference in 1986.
